The standards have been produced as part of the government’s School food: top marks programme. The programme, launched by the Department of Education, the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety and the Health Promotion Agency for Northern Ireland, recognises the important role schools play in contributing to childhood nutrition and in developing children’s knowledge and skills in relation to making healthier food choices. There is a companion publication, Nutritional standards for school lunches: a guide to implementation (available here), which details the standards that schools must apply during lunch time. The School food: top marks programme also includes the substantial nutritional resource, School food: the essential guide (available here). |
